Gauteng

The smallest province by land and the largest by people, Gauteng holds Johannesburg, Pretoria and the East Rand. It has the most families looking for au pairs in the country and the deepest pool of students and graduates to fill those roles.

Western Cape

Cape Town and the Winelands draw families from across the country and abroad, and the province's universities supply a steady flow of au pairs. Demand is strongest in the Southern and Northern Suburbs, Somerset West and Stellenbosch.

KwaZulu-Natal

Durban, the North Coast and the Upper Highway area have a warm, outdoors family culture and a strong tradition of live-out au pairs doing school runs and afternoon care.

Eastern Cape

Gqeberha and East London are the province's two family hubs, both coastal, both with a strong school sport culture and a relaxed pace that suits live-in and live-out arrangements alike.

Free State

Which parts of South Africa does Au Pair Nation cover?

Is Au Pair Nation an agency?

No. We match families and au pairs and give both sides the tools to get to know each other safely. There are no placement fees and no commission. The arrangement is between the family and the au pair.

What does an au pair cost in South Africa?

Live-out au pairs typically earn R55 to R140 an hour depending on the city, driving and experience, which is roughly R5,500 to R14,000 a month for a 20 to 25 hour week. Live-in au pairs usually earn R4,500 to R12,000 a month plus room and board. Johannesburg's northern suburbs and Cape Town's Southern Suburbs are the top of the market.

Do au pairs in South Africa need a visa?

Most au pairs on Au Pair Nation are South African citizens or residents. Anyone from abroad needs the right to live and work in South Africa before taking a placement; we do not arrange visas.
