Most families find an au pair through a friend of a friend, a Facebook group, or an agency that charges a lot and tells you little. Most au pairs find families the same way, with even less protection.

Au Pair Nation is a South African company building a better way: a place where both sides make a proper profile, both sides verify who they are, and the matching is based on what actually matters for a good placement, from children's ages to languages to whether someone can drive.

We're starting in South Africa because it's home, and because the local au pair market is big, informal and badly served. The United States, United Kingdom and Australia follow once we've proven it works.

What we believe

• Au pairs should never pay to find work.
• Nobody should be able to message a stranger's teenager or a young au pair uninvited.
• Children's details don't belong on the internet.
• A good match is explainable. If we can't say why two people fit, we shouldn't suggest it.
